Most people buying a new printer today are looking at a choice between a Laser Printer and an Inkjet Printer, although there are more types out there, more of this later.

SOHO refers to “Small Office Home Office”, an almost arbitrary category, since there are big overlaps with other “categories” of users at both ends of this definition.

For instance, a home user who is a hobbyist, with an interest in photography will want a color printer capable of printing on photo paper, with reasonable resolution, to match his digital SLR. The printer he would need certainly falls in the SOHO category.

This color system is in contrast to the more familiar RGB, or Red Green Blue system used in your TV and computer monitor. RGB is a “Subtractive Process”, that is, the proportion of colors is altered to produce all the other colors by subtracting from or reducing, say the intensity of the red. It is not always easy working with printers. There are times when you experience problems that require simple troubleshooting skills. There are problems like the printer does not print out good quality outputs, especially on pictures. There are blotchy images or some colors do not come out at all. In cases wherein there is incorrect colors coming out or no color is coming out at all, it is time that you apply your troubleshooting skills. This is a simple task that you can easily do by yourself. You will only be required to do several steps to correct this problem.

Make sure that you are using the best quality of printing. To check this using Windows OS, you just click the ‘Start’ button, then ‘Settings’ and look for the printer that you wanted to work with. Once you clicked the printer, open the settings folder and choose the print quality that you prefer to use.

Use the required paper for your printer. If possible, use the same brand of paper and ink (black and color cartridge) that the manufacturers recommend since these are compatible with the printer. In case you are using a special type of paper, choose the proper definition for it.

Use the correct orientation of the paper. The glossy part is usually facing up so that when the printer ‘eats’ it, the print will come out on that area.

Start printing. If you see that the print out does not produce quality output, check the cartridges, both the black cartridge and the color cartridges.

Presence of white lines/spots or lighter output. Clean the nozzles of the print head because it is clogged.

Zigzag vertical lines on the output. The print head of the printer are misaligned. Realign the print head with the use of the printer’s utility program. If you are not familiar with the procedure, it is always safe to check on your printer manual.

Missing color or inconsistent flow of color. Check if there is still enough ink. Replace the color cartridge, if necessary. If there is still enough ink, clean the print head because it might just be clogged.

You can also check the color setting to ensure that it is in the automatic mode. If you prefer to change or adjust it manually, make sure that you do this after you select the advanced color settings option.

Another thing that you should check is the condition of the printer and the paper that you are using for printing. Humidity is a great factor that can affect the output.

Sample print from time to time until you get the result that you want. If you have already achieved the output that you like, save your settings.

If you have tried everything and the result is still the same, it is best that bring your printer and color cartridge back to the manufacturer. You can ask them to check on it and do the necessary troubleshooting.

Moreover, there is an even greater need for preventative maintenance with laser printers – largely due to the fact that they print more pages per minute and have more moving parts than inkjets. Here, the maintenance process involves inspecting components such as ozone filters, static eliminator teeth and cleaning the fuser unit.

Here are some preventative maintenance ideas that should help you get fewer service calls:

Do not use solvent or ammonia-based cleaners. The right thing to use is isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. Use an alcohol-dampened or water-dampened lint free cloth. – Always inspect paper pickup rollers for dust. Paper pickup rollers collect dust and need to be cleaned periodically.

- When rollers become shiny and appear “glazed,” they need to be replaced.

- Always inspect separation pads for dust. As with the pickup rollers, clean with alcohol or a water-dampened lint-free cloth. Separation pads should be replaced at the same time as pickup rollers.

- Transfer rollers should be cleaned if really dirty, but it is important not to touch the rollers with bare fingers. A dry lint-free cloth must be used, and if a lot of toner spills on the transfer roller, then the only option is to replace the transfer roller

- Regularly inspect mirrors for dust and grime build-up. These are best cleaned with filtered compressed air or a lint-free cloth or swab moistened with lens cleaner.

- Finally, inspect the fuser assembly rollers for marks, and replace them if there are any marks of blemishes present.

Following these tips will ensure you need fewer service calls, that your workflow will not be frustrated at critical times, and will certainly increase the life span of the printer.
